Watch R2-D2 straight up murder another astromech droid.

That's.... dark.
Also unfortunately unoriginal, but I always have to remember that it's a dumb kids show, not a movie.

The show overall is pretty dark, I just started watching it and I am throughly enjoying it.

THAT explains it.
See, from all the clips I've seen, the jokey, weird, "low budget CGI" appearance of it seemed to indicate that it was a hammy show meant for pre-teens or under to cash in on the series, sort of ignoring canon or popular storylines in favor of lighthearted "gags".
But if what you're saying is true, then it makes much more sense. It's a dark show, that they use exaggerated animation and gags to help squeeze onto kid's TV. That's why it would seem jokey all the time if I only am seeing a few scenes at once, not an entire episode, because I'm missing the underlying stuff.
I might try it out then. I'm not a huge fan of the clone wars storylines (I dig the post-empire era the most) but it could be worth a look.

The animation isn't great but there is some good content in there. I like the personification of the clones, you actually get the idea that they are unique people and it makes watching them die all the time a little heavier. The droids are annoying as hell and Anakin/Obi-Wan's relationship is waay different than it is in the movies.
In the one episode I just watched a young clone sacrifices himself in order to save his buddies who are later on told by Commander Cody that they are exactly the kind of men he needs in the 501st, ya know the one's who slaughter all the Jedi...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdpH-N… Did you ever see the animated clone wars that preceded Episode 3? These:

It's fucking fantastic . It's easily the best non-film adaptation I've seen, and they compiled it into a full length film that I put in my comment.
I don't want to spoil anything, but let's just say it makes episode II and III make way more sense and redeems a few characters from the films. The thing is, they were given free license to do with whatever they wanted, to create 5-minute "minisodes" that would showcase individual storylines. Nothing had to be approved or made canon, so they could create as unique stories as they wanted.
It's animated by the same guy behind Samurai Jack.
They were so popular that they cleared it for a whole new season. They got access to the Episode III script, and lead the story right up to the beginning of the film.
It's success is entirely the reason they moved on to CGI, I believe. Definitely worth a watch.

Oh, and to futher drive the point home, some of the new characters they created? Asajj Ventress and Durge. They also created the canon reason for Anakin's robotic hand change from Episode 2 and 3, as well as narrate the Shatterpoint storyline preceding Episode III.
